Attack on Marriage is Back Introduction of New Bill HB5170

Late last week the anti-family forces introduced a bill in the Illinois House of Representatives, HB5170 the “Religious Freedom and Marriage Fairness Act”. State Representatives Greg Harris (D-Chicago), Kelly Cassidy (D-Chicago) and Deborah Mell (D-Chicago) introduced the bill, which if passed, will alter traditional marriage in Illinois to include the coupling of homosexuals. Cosponsors of the bill include Barbara Flynn Currie (D-Chicago), Sara Feigenholtz (D-Chicago), Ann Williams (D-Chicago) and Daniel Biss (D-Skokie).

The ironic wording of this bill, which begins with “religious freedom”, is reminiscent of the “Religious Freedom Protection and Civil Union Act”, which was simply an incremental step toward the introduction of this new bill, HB5170, which will fully legalize gay marriage. Whose religious freedom is it protecting?

In Washington, Gov. Christine Gregoire of Washington State has signed into law a gay marriage bill that will force church-owned facilities to accommodate homosexual ceremonies. The bill makes Washington the sixth U.S. state to redefine marriage, in addition to the District of Columbia. The bill text originally stated that religious organizations that provide “accommodations, facilities, advantages, privileges, services, or goods related to the solemnization or celebration of a marriage” to the public, must offer all those goods for use to homosexual couples seeking marriage or else face penalties for discrimination.

Now Illinois faces this same threat if we don’t act quickly to urge our representatives to vote NO on HB5170. An article from Illinois Family Institute states: “This debate will not be decided based on who has the stronger arguments. It will be won by whoever cares more.” If legislators believe that voting to redefine marriage will cost them their job, they won’t do it. It really is that simple.”

TAKE IMMEDIATE ACTION! Call your State Representative and urge him/her to vote NO on HB5170! Forward this information along to friends & family & everyone you know.
